Position Overview

Located in beautiful Northern British Columbia, our client is seeking a Financial Controller to join their team in the road maintenance and construction industry.

This well-establish group of companies is headquartered in Terrace, BC; a growing community in the centre of an economic boom. 

The owners of the company have been in this industry for over 25 years. They are looking for a Controller to manage the business requirements as listed below so they can focus on client relations, building the company and working on site.

Responsibilities

 

  • Ensure accurate and timely month end, quarterly and year end closes
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements
  • Be responsible for overseeing all journal entries, adjusting entries and reconciliations
  • Ensure monthly and quarterly bank reconciliations are completed accurately and on time 
  •  Knowledge of government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Provide detailed guidance to senior management regarding budget and financial planning
  •  Responsible for all activities with reference to financial management and financial reporting including budgeting, cost accounting, forecasting, cash management, and asset management
  • Contract management
  • Equipment fleet management – insurance, bonding, leasing, contract
  • Prepare all required documentation to support financing needs
  • Administration of the company's accounting system to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting standards and internal controls
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports for internal and external reporting for our investors
  • Payroll for salaried and hourly staff
  •  Responsible for preparing working documents for year-end audit purposes. Acting liaison with external auditors
  • Responsible for office staff – day to day operations of office clerk who handles;
    • All general accounting related tasks including data entry, recording journal entries, maintaining   balance sheet schedules and ledgers, accounts. Bank reconciliation, accounts payable, processing invoices and issuing payments, general accounts receivables
 

Requirements

 

Direct Accounting and Management Experience:
  • 5+ years experience working in a similar role
  •  Accounting Designation required
  • Prior experience of fleet management – insurance, bonding, leasing, contract
  • Financial reporting, forecasting and budgets
  • Full cycle accounting experience, this position will oversee day-to-day accounting  
  • Large Vendor accounts (A/R, A/P) and contract negotiation
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Sage 50 and ACCPAC
  • Experience preparing audits and working with external auditors
  • Supervisory experience – managing a small office
  • Safety experience an asset – National Safety Code procedures and knowledge
 
Other Requirements:
  •  A strong problem solver with a positive attitude and excellent relationship management skills
  • Excellent communication skills – both written and verbal
  • Highly organized time management skills - you’re able to juggle multiple priorities at once
  • Prior knowledge of the road construction industry not required, but certainly an asset.
·      Proven ability to effectively supervise up to five (5) direct reports
 
This position will typically be a 9-5 type role, but may require all hands on deck from May to September at times.
