Hello All: Thank you so much for reading this, we would appreciate any help you can provide us. Background I am a teacher in the Denver Metro area for Kindergarten-12th grade “at risk” students. We have students who attend this alternative public charter school across the state of Colorado at different learning centers. Our students who were once drop-outs or involved in gangs, drugs, etc. are now thriving learners! Our students succeed in a safe and caring environment with high academic expectations! Why We’re Asking for Help: The 2007-2008 school-year is coming to an end, however, we are looking forward to kicking off next year with a bang. While our kids have a place to learn and caring adults to facilitate learning, we lack other resources that shape a well-rounded learning environment. We want to give our “at-risk” kids the same advantages and opportunities as other students in the state. In order to do so, we would truly appreciate your contributions, anything you may be able to afford! All that we ask is that items are in safe and good condition, as they will be used by Kindergarten-12th graders. What We Need Lakewood Center (Kindergarten-12th): • Playground equipment – our little kiddos really need to burn off some energy and enjoy recess! We are seeking playground sets, slides, swings, etc. • Picnic tables- The lovely Spring/Fall offers some great opportunities for children to enjoy eating lunch outside or catching up on homework in the clean air! Our older kids would also love to have a spot to sit down and chat; unfortunately our kids have nothing to use during lunch/free-time. • Benches – Our kids need a break after running around during recess and gym! We would love some park-style benches. • Exercise equipment/machines- We would like to offer an exercise/weight room to our high school students. We are seeking any weight benches, weights, a stationary bike, elliptical, treadmill, and workout balls, or anything else that could help students stay in shape! Aurora Center (8th – 12th) : • Gym/exercise equipment- This center is also trying to design an exercise/weight room for our high school students. Our kids need to burn off energy after working on academics each day! Anything would be appreciated! • Educational videos- We would love to have some donated educational videos that are age appropriate for 8th-12th grade. We could use Science or Social Studies videos, or anything that may support learning. • Grade Appropriate Books- Unfortunately, we are lacking chapter books for our students to read for school or relaxation! We would appreciate donations of new or used books that young adults would enjoy reading in a variety of genres. • Classroom Desks- We are still in need of student desks to fill some of our classrooms. We are seeking traditional style desks/chairs for our kids to have a space of their own! • Guest Speakers- This center loves to have guests come in to visit and speak with students. We are seeking anyone with an inspirational story and a little free-time to share your past and knowledge with our students! We would also love speakers who can present about specific topics (i.e. careers, put on a science show, play, etc.). Additionally, a group of college students who are willing to share their time and enlighten our students about what college is like from a young point of view would be great! Monetary donations would also be valued at both centers and would be used for field trips, school supplies, special projects, or whatever you prefer. Once again, thank you for your time!
