Milwaukee Crime Mystery Shines a Light on Gangs, Cops
BOOK REVIEW
Title: The Cozen Protocol
Author: Mitchell Nevin
Updated: Aug. 28, 2009 12:21 p.m.
It’s a real who dun it. Centered on events in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, The Cozen Protocol has all the markings of a truly outstanding crime story. The fictional e-book, available exclusively at Amazon.com, pits good versus evil, gang bangers against gang bangers, with street-smart cops battling both the mean streets and opportunistic police administrators.
The novel’s plot revolves around an ongoing war over drug turf. Two south side gangs—the Latin Maniacs and a group of cutthroats from the Dominican Republic—slug it out. As the morgue fills, the local newspaper dubs the troubled neighborhoods “a killing field.”
The increase in the level of deadly violence causes the sitting police chief, Jim Grayson, to fall from favor. Soon, the chief of police announces his pending retirement. As possible successors jockey for attention, internal investigators arrest a handful of rank-and-file officers on corruption charges. These events cause a high profile talk-radio host, a gutsy reporter, and a prominent defense attorney to initiate their own inquires.
Steven Spingola, an author and retired Milwaukee Police Department lieutenant who shares the same publisher, acknowledged reading excerpts from The Cozen Protocol. “The dialogue between characters,” Spingola suggests, “makes it clear that Mitchell Nevin possess significant knowledge of police procedures, criminal investigations, and organized crime. The portrait painted of police department insider politics is cutting edge.”
The Cozen Protocol ($7.99, Amazon.com) is an entertaining read with an interesting and sometimes sinister list of characters. What is unusual is the absence of one particular individual at the center of the story. Unlike television police dramas, where the innermost character is virtually omni-present, The Cozen Protocol illustrates how and why police work is a team effort. Although I am not a gang leader or a tough inner city cop, The Cozen Protocol made me feel as if I was right in the game.
