Borealis Music seeking a Booking Agent
Borealis Music is an independently owned business supporting the music of Linnea Good – in performance and the sale
of audio and sheet music. Begun in 1988, the company has established Linnea Good as one of the leading touring singersongwriters
for the mainstream Christian Church in Canada.
Linnea Good travels approximately 1/3 of the year. She travels either alone, with her drummer-spouse or in Good
Company trio, singing primarily in church settings. She goes on tour approximately 6 times a year, dividing her time
between areas where she is better known (western and central Canada) and new audience areas
(Washington/Oregon/California and the US Eastern seaboard). She gives concerts, teaches in workshops and leads in
worship. Tour duration can be anywhere from 3 days to 7 weeks.
Borealis Music seeks a Booking Agent to arrange Linnea Good's tours in Canada and the United States.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of Linnea Good, the agent will do the following:
Ongoing Procedures:
• Update the web calendar with any upcoming events, keeping the details current.
• Keep a current database of individuals and relevant church contacts for Tour
Invitation purposes
• Keep a running record of churches in each tour area who have expressed interest
in future possibilities
• Keep a current database of Linnea's fans, referenced by region
• Devise a yearly plan with Linnea for the timing of various tours
• Meet via telephone with Linnea on a weekly basis to go over new developments
• Keep a running communication "log" with Linnea as to the status of tours and
events
Preparing for a Tour:
• Send out tour invitations to seeded interested parties, enquiries from past tours, church database and Linnea’s
personal contact list.
• Receive and respond to inquiries and booking requests via email, following up when necessary by phone.
• Craft a Tour Itinerary, maximizing events and minimizing driving distances.
• Confirm individual event contract details via email confirmation with event hosts.
• Send promo packages to confirmed events via Canada Post.
• Update upcoming venues on billeting requirements and last-minute considerations close to the time of the event.
• Create an Itinerary with details of both travel distances and host fee information
Be in communication with:
• Borealis Administrator as to tour information, so sales and promotions are coordinated
• Borealis Bookkeeper, so tour spreadsheets can be prepared
The Borealis Booking Agent
The booking agent is the first line of contact between potential hosts and Linnea Good, and the ongoing support to the
hosts before and after the tour.
S/He has an ability to:
• write a well-crafted letter of invitation to communities of faith, using contemporary technologies (word processing,
graphics, html, etc).
• advise Linnea in setting event fees and budgets
• run a simple financial spreadsheet
• be business-like about the contract and commitments involved in booking, including following through with hosts for
promised payment, provided items, etc.
• be, however, gentle in inviting bookings, recognizing the unique circumstances of doing business in the context of the
Church
• keep track of a large number of contacts, conversations and tour trajectories
• be creative with marketing and promotion
• work with Linnea, soliciting direction and keeping her apprised of the current status of tours, while not inviting micromanagement
S/He is:
• home-based (ie. not away for long periods or without warning)
• able to work on commission
• independently motivated
• excited by, and wishing to "chase down", a potential booking
• firm and conciliatory in negotiating
• familiar with, and respectful of, the diversity of the Christian Church in North America
Hours:
Working hours are flexible and, for the most part, e-mail-based. Agent hours amount to perhaps an average of 4 to 6
hours per week, reaching an estimated maximum of 20 hours during the busiest pre-tour period.
It is to be expected that in the entry into the position, the booking agent's hours will be higher than they eventually will
become. To ensure a smooth and successful transition into the Agent responsibility, Borealis suggests that the first tour
be co-booked by Borealis' outgoing Agent and the incoming.
Commission Pay:
The Booking Agent will bill Borealis Music for 15% of the total fees received, after the tour, and then again for any excess
receipts at the end of the total payment period. The fee does not include taxes or sales of merchandise. The fee does
include concert, workshop and worship bookings initiated by Linnea but administered by the Agent.
A special "support rate" may be negotiated by Linnea and the Booking Agent for circumstances when Linnea takes on the
agent-work for a tour herself, but for which the agent administers the contract, basic information and promotions package
to hosts.
With concerts bringing in anywhere from $400 to $1500 each, with a median of $900.00, the booking agent might expect
to make an average of $350.00 in a month.
