Literary Arts at The Banff Centre elevates a creative community of fiction and non-fiction writers, poets, journalists, and other publishing professionals. By offering inspiring programs, projects, and publications, Literary Arts stimulates discussion about writing and publishing, raises awareness of the written and spoken word, and makes manifest the belief that, to change the world, art and ideas must be communicated to others.
The Opportunity
The Banff Centre is looking for aDirector, Literary Arts. Reporting to the Vice President, Arts this position requires exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and is responsible for the strategic and day-to-day leadership of the area’s literary programs and financial operations. The Director will contribute expertise in collaboration with other areas to position the Centre as a leading international site for the original creation, artistic development and dissemination of new work within a vibrant, interdisciplinary artistic environment.

Whether it is in building on current successes or introducing new initiatives, the Director, Literary Arts will be an experienced leader and arts administrator with a comprehensive understanding of the international and Canadian literary arts scene.
* Cognizant of the cultural, economic, and political factors affecting the needs of authors and researchers in the writing and publishing fields at the various stages of their careers
* Provides strategic leadership, program direction and day-to-day management of Literary Arts programs including but not limited to program design and delivery, budget development and oversight, grant writing, and human resource management
* Working closely with Advancement teams, actively develops initiatives and pursues new sources of funding, both public and private, to increase existing resources in Literary Arts programming
* Working closely with Marketing teams, develops recruitment and promotional strategies for Literary Arts programs and public events
* Collaborates with colleagues across the Centre in the interest of developing and delivering innovative, interdisciplinary programming
* Establishes and maintains a broad network of contacts, and develops strategic partnerships with government, industry sponsors, foundations, donors and key sector organizations regionally, nationally and internationallyQualifications
* A master’s degree or equivalent experience as a writer, editor, teacher in a post-secondary or writing program environment or publisher is required
* Ten years’ of demonstrable success in progressively-responsible leadership and arts’ administration roles
* Curating programs for writers in a festival environment is considered an asset
* Some knowledge of writing short and long writing programs; experience producing public literary events; significant contact with and knowledge of Canadian and international writers and programs
* familiarity with digital creation and e-publishing; familiarity with new forms of writing, dissemination and social mediaEmployment Terms & Benefits
* This is a full-time management position, subject to a 12 month probationary period
* Salary commensurate with level of education and experience
