ABOUT WINDOWS 8

Windows 8 promises to become the largest app ecosystem in the world, with over 1 million new users every day that are going to want to download apps starting at General Availability on October 26^th. Visual Studio 2012 provides developers with the world’s most power development platform with an unprecedented number of platform options for building Windows 8 apps including C++, C#, Visual Basic, and JavaScript. Interface design options include Direct X, XMAL, and HTML 5/CSS.

In this content-packed 3-hour workshop Microsoft Technology Evangelists Randy Guthrie and Sam Stokes will walk through the basics of Windows 8 app design and the essential techniques to get you started on building and marketing your own apps.

This session is recommended for students, faculty and pro developers who have at least some programming knowledge. Experience with Visual Studio is recommended but not required. This workshop will not be presented in a furnished lab; all attendees should bring their own laptop if they want to participate in the hands-on components.

Pre-workshop Preparations for Attendees

In order to develop apps for Windows 8, you must use Visual Studio 2012 on a computer running Windows 8. Students enrolled in science, technology, engineering, math or design courses can get Windows 8 Pro and Visual Studio 2012 from their school’s DreamSpark Premium subscription. Pro Developers can get Windows 8 from their MSDN subscriptions, or can download evaluation copies of Win 8 and VS 2012 prior to General Availability at

Mac Users can either dual boot Windows 8 using Bootcamp, Parallels, or VM Ware. We will have a very limited number of Windows to Go drives preconfigured for the workshop available for loan on a first-come/first served basis for those who have not been able to get the necessary software installed in advance of the workshop.

ABOUT RANDY GUTHRIE, TECHNICAL EVANGELIST

In this role, Mr. Guthrie provides academic and research support to faculty and students at schools in the western United States. Mr. Guthrie’s research interests include Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Technology Pedagogy and his current technology passion is Windows 8 App Development.

Prior to his working at Microsoft, Mr. Guthrie was a Professor at Cal Poly Pomona, where he taught software engineering, programming and information systems courses. During his tenure at Cal Poly, Mr. Guthrie was also the Volunteer Director of a Community Employment Center, which helps explain why he commonly can be found giving career workshops to tech students and IT professional groups. Before his appointment at Cal Poly, Mr. Guthrie spent thirteen years working for the Northrop Grumman Corporation, where he was a contract manager on the Stealth Bomber Project, a project manager, and financial analyst.

Mr. Guthrie earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of La Verne in 1991, an MBA in 1998 from the Peter F. Drucker School of Management, and a PhD in Information Science in 2007 from the School of Information Science and Technology at Claremont Graduate University. Mr. Guthrie currently resides in Denver, Colorado with his wife Jane and daughter Molly, where he can be found training for sprint triathlons when it’s warm and skiing when it’s cold.
