Here are five good reasons to put some mulch down on your bare dirt:
* Suppresses weed growth. In the Bay Area, Rain = Weeds. Mulch is the best organic weed control.
* Keeps moisture in. During the dry months, that means less water needed to irrigate the garden.
* Reduces soil erosion and compaction. Compaction is particularly bad with our Bay Area clay.
* When applied consistently over time, improves the soil structure.
* Support beneficial micro-organisms and worm love it too. Got to keep those worms happy.
Mulch makes a garden look better too, just look at the before and after picture above. The smaller grade bark have an especially finished look. But there are several types of mulches to choose from, catering to both the aesthetic and practical. So to review, Mulch is good for the soil, bad for weeds, conserves water, looks good...that's a win-win-win-win. Hard to find that these days.
