VOLLRATH MANOR
809 Locust Street
Boonville, Missouri
Vollrath Manor was built as the home for George and Roseina Vollrath in 1844. Architecturally, the structure is a Federal/Greek Revival transitional residence-Federal in style and form with Greek Revival affinities in respect to the front porch, woodwork and fireplace mantles. Interesting details on the exterior of the home are noted in the differences between the garden and common bond mortar styles located at the first and second levels, stone lintels above the upper windows and the gable parapet on the east roof level. On the interior, the formal living took place at the upper level where one finds the best woodwork and fireplace mantels and 10.5 foot ceilings. At the ground level the ceilings are 7.5 feet and here was located the winter kitchen, laundry room and perhaps the children's bedroom. All seven rooms plus the utility room measure 16 feet square.
A vaulted sandstone wine cellar is entered from this level and is the largest of its type located within a house in the Central Missouri area.
Restoration is necessary and when comleted this home will be one of the "historic gems" of the Boonslick.
George Vollrath was a German immigrant potter, vintner and miller who arrived in Boonville in the late 1830?s. He purchased the fledgling Boonville Pottery, which was established in 1835, from Marcus Williams and expanded it into a venture that became the largest utilitarian stoneware pottery in the state of Missouri andwas located directly across the sreet. By the Civil War it is estimated that this pottery produced up to 70% of all the pottery produced in Missouri.
The grounds of Vollrath Manor contain 4.5 acres. It is the largest greenspace in the old original part of town. There are both sandstone and granite walls at the front and rear of the home. The grounds contain a storage garage, apple orchard, possible slave house(s) site (Vollrath owned 6 slaves), a large woods with hiking trails and a super building site reached by an alley, abundant wildlife, a gigantic Pecan tree, 655 feet on both sides of the Ream Branch Stream, a fresh water spring historically known as "the Old City Spring" and numerous pottery dump sites where stoneware shards may be found.

This residence needs restoration, which would include heating/cooling, plumbing and electric and other restoration common to realively untouched homes of this age. Restore, this would be one of the "gems" of the Boonslick Region. If one chose to restore it and them sell it-money could be made.
