I bought my first hang drum from the Hanghaus back in 2007. I was lucky enough to have a student of mine receive an invitation to go to the hanghaus. He offered to bring me an instrument back on my behalf and I gratefully accepted.
Upon receiving my first hang drum I was overwhelmed by the quality of the sound and the resonance produced from the instrument. The percussive possibilities were and still are endless with a wide range of scale and rich bass like quality from the ding. On top of this musical spectrum it allows for the melody to be created with an impressive rhythmic quality created around the ding which really was the icing on the cake for me – I could have a full band in one instrument! (Bass, Rhythm, Melody, Harmony). My 2nd Generation is tuned to D, A,Bb, C, D, E, F, A. This really lends it’s self to the Aeolian scale which can create some really atmospheric grooves. You can listen to a couple of track clips below:
I use it in my percussion group all the time and it breaks up the show a little and always gets the crowd really buzzing. The Cajon is an instrument which is a great accompaniment to the hang which provides a drum kit like possibility, giving both performers more than adequate scope to be creative.
