There are 14 custom mandolins in this limited edition !!!! number ten has been sold!!! only numbers 11 and 8 are pictured in this ad if you are interested in buying one of these you really need to come to to the house to try them out they all have a great sound. John L Williams has designed and built each of his mandolins from pieces of spruce, maple and ebony. He also did all the machining of the metal parts and cut the pearl, abalone, and various shell inlaying them by hand onto the different surfaces of each mandolin
# 11 is made of:
neck: tiger maple
back: big leaf maple
sides: big leaf maple
front: Adirondack spruce with some bear claw in it which is very unusual
headstock: Gabon ebony with John's cursive initials JLW as an inlay of mother of pearl and various other types of shell
Elite Tuners they are gold plated or silver plated with black or MOP knobs
pick guard: Gabon ebony with an inlay of MOP and abalone and white binding
finger board: Gabon ebony with MOP and abalone dots on the top and sides also a flowing inlay design from the 5th fret to the 19th fret
arm rest: Gabon ebony
truss rod cover: Gabon ebony has an inlay design of abalone and mother of pearl
the tailpiece is machined stainless steel three pieces with a hinge cover that you lift and hook the strings in place then close
this is this is a very unique tailpiece that most mandolins won't have anything similar and you will never lose your cover.
the neck is removed by taking the brass or stainless steel screw and washer on the back of the body up on the neck end out
the bridge is made out of blood wood with brass adjusting nuts they are a bit larger for easier adjustment
ticks in the case one is wedge to help you adjust the height of your bridge pushing the bridge so you can turn the nuts easily
the other stick is for the bridge positioning from the middle of the twelfth fret to the closest off set on the bridge. the numbers of this distance are from the nut to the bridge is 13.875, from 12 th fret to the closet off set compensation is 6.987
John's mandolins are designed and manufactured by his own hand, including the inlays, bridge, tailpiece and hardware - everything except the tuners and the strings!
The unique blend of woods, the hand-rubbed finish, the blood wood bridge and the custom brass tailpiece all contribute to the rich and powerful sound that flows from John's mandolins.
The fronts are carved Adirondack Spruce, Engelmann Spruce, Sitka Spruce or Red Spruce. The backs, sides and necks are tiger maple, quilted maple or big leaf maple.
The binding around the body and the headstock is double celluloid ivory. Bridges are made of blood wood and have brass adjusting screws. The pick guards are ebony inlaid with abalone and pearl.The tailpieces are John's own unique design and have been hand-tooled by him. They have a hinged cover for stringing ease. All are made of brass or stainless steel. John's tailpieces are also for sale.
The head stocks are figured maple with an ebony veneer inlaid with the JLW logo of pearl and abalone. The tuners are Elite, gold or silver plated with pearl or black knobs.
