Since its inception ultrasound has been a truly invaluable tool. It has provided the medical field the opportunity to peer into the unknown, far beyond what the human eye can see. In the case of pregnancy and fetal sonograms it results in a truly magical wonder to behold. Like a security camera, or x ray vision of sorts, it reaches into the unknown, capturing vital feedback and information far beneath the skin and out of the darkness, still pictures suddenly come to life!

Nothing could be more awe inspiring than the first glance of the yolk sac, or the first glimpse of the beating heart, or that first look at the monitor when you see your baby’s first kick or wave of the hand. Nothing makes you realize or sends the message that you are truly pregnant, and brings it to life, more than the fetal sonogram!

For decades, OB/Gyn’s have prescribed diagnostic ultrasounds as a way of monitoring the pregnancy and the growing fetus through each trimester warranting a thorough diagnostic. This allows doctors the means of assessing the stages of the fetus’ development and the mothers overall health. From a medical perspective, it is undoubtedly a very powerful tool in providing all the crucial information needed to paint a picture and piece together the status of the world within.

As with all existing technologies… over time, systems evolve, think faster, become more efficient, and make major leaps and bounds in innovation. New discoveries and implementations, such as the case with the advent of 3D/4D ultrasound, is a perfect example. Like the snap of your fingers, overnight, what was once recognized as the cornerstone of  modern ultrasound, 2D(black & white) sonograms became a thing of the past. One may liken it to the leap from the heralded Walkman to the groundbreaking Ipod.  A major distinction and line in the sand was drawn, where ultrasound imaging had taken on a new life, and morphed into a whole new shape, taking on a whole new platform, adding along with it color and depth, and giving realism to what may have seemed foreign to the untrained eye of which, was hard to decipher and understand. 

This new technology was still unfamiliar and took a while for everyone to catch on and grasp onto. What were they dealing with when the topic of “3D Ultrasound” was mentioned? Even today, as it has become far more recognized, people are still unaware such a thing exists. It progressively continues to gain enormous popularity  and over the last 5 years, it has gone from “obscure to for sure” and is touted as a “must see experience” for all those who are in the “with child” club.

There all still those who are not convinced and somewhat leery and reluctant, and have reservations of partaking in 3D/4D. Some have concerns over safety, some say they find it too revealing, that it leaves nothing to the imagination. I can respectfully say everyone has a right to their own opinion, but having worked and experienced this technology and its benefits thousands of times over, having heard and watched the excitement, the overwhelming responses and reactions, the hugs, and exclamations of joy and relief, I, having witnessed this, can proclaim the truth is, it is remarkable!... and, rest assured it is safe, and despite what some may think or believe, it almost inevitably results in the same reaction, regardless of race, cultural  and social classes and religious denominations. I repeatedly hear the words of expecting mothers alike and their husbands and families continually exclaim. They use words like “this is amazing, how incredible, WOW, can you believe this!” or “I didn’t expect this”, or “I wish they had this when I was pregnant” being blurted from Grandma or a Sister or an auntie, or the overflow of emotion at first glance when Mommy and the crowd begin to cry tears of joy.

For myself, it is a moment to share and to inform, to pave the way to a moment, to rejoice, to shape a relationship, to build that bridge, that connection, to be the one that draws the curtains and inspires “Oohs and Ahs” from all that have the privilege to revel in this gift of technology and the marvelous window it provides. This is 3D/4D ultrasound, and it is what I do, as a profession day in and day out. It is not just my job. It is my inspiration, my art, my bread and butter, my career. I put everything into what I do, and inspire all those who work within our group to do the same.
