Seward Stewards was the name given to the Seward Park Environmental & Audubon Center’s (Center) volunteer program at its inception in April 2008. “Seward” was derived from Seward Park, and “Steward” was chosen to represent the type of volunteer we wish to cultivate: someone who can embody the spirit of Audubon by acting as a caretaker, or steward, of the Center, the Park, the Southeast Seattle community, and the environment in general.
Volunteer is a pay rate, not a job title. Seward Stewards are therefore recognized as vital, unpaid Center staff that will continually help shape the direction of our organization.
Audubon relies heavily on volunteer support, and as such, the Seward Stewards are regarded as the backbone of the Center. Their donated time can be matched to a dollar amount, providing important “in-kind” donations necessary for procuring grants and other funding resources. More importantly, however, they promote a sense of community within the Center.
The goal of this program is to establish a core group of Stewards to assist with the everyday operations and programming needs of the Center. These areas include: the nature shop and office, library, educational programs, interpretive walks, Center docents, and events.
