A Dream for 2013

Over the past ten years, I have seen lots of young adults who have proven their ability to succeed but who met damaging events that threaten their future.  The growth process for these young men and women is often stopped by circumstances and/or agencies far more powerful than they can deal with.

I am suggesting we offer medical and legal services at no cost to a few young adults who encounter problems beyond their financial/personal limits.  I am suggesting we Offer those services with a minimal amount of paper-work, hoop-jumping or time-delays.

Legal issues include need for attorney representation as they face private or government accusations that appear false or distorted.   

When local agencies do not offer appropriate medical services, delay those services or complicate eligibility.  Medical issues include the inability to access appropriate medical services when they are needed.  This also includes costs for services (indebtedness) that gravely effect the young adult’s capacity for personal success. 

Service Structure to exist:

1.      A group of individuals (submitters) who seek to identify those young adults that qualify for services.

2.      A group of individuals who meet monthly (or as needed) to review those approved submitters and their submitted reports.  This group would also identify those young adults who qualify for services.  Information about those who qualify would then be submitted to volunteer legal or medical individuals.

3.      Within 48 hours, the volunteer doctor or lawyer would indicate if they had interest or the time to assist the young adult, at no cost, in finding help for their problem/issue.  

4.      A report would be requested by the volunteer as to the results of his/her services before future referrals were made.  

Some needed legal or medical services may allow for a month’s assessing process.  Some situations may require immediate attention.  This issue needs to be addressed.  One suggestion would be to have a doctor and a lawyer available by phone for emergency review.

This is not a “cure-all” process.  It’s a beginning process that needs to be flexible.  It’s a beginning that can lead to assisting a few young adults who have no options as they face problems that far exceed their personal capacities.  It rests with the people who see this need and want to make a solution happen.
