The Vancouver Aquarium's first calf born at the aquarium was Qila in 1995 to Aurora.
She was also the first calf to be conceived and born in a Canadian aquarium.
Qila gave birth to her own calf, Tiqa, in 2008, making Tiqa the first calf born to an
aquarium born beluga. Three year old Tiqa died of phnemoia Sept, 16, 2011.
Aurora, the Vancouver Aquarium beluga whale that had been battling a serious illness,
passed away Nov.26/2016. Aurora had been monitored by aquarium staff after her
daughter, 21 year old Qila, passed away on Nov.16. Like Quila did before she died,
Aurora displayed symptoms such as abdominal cramping, loss of appetite and lethargy.
