Combining Elegance and Performance: the Bentley Continental GT V8
November 2, 2019 by Carshopper.com under Bentley Cars
The slightly less powerful yet more agile 2020 Bentley Continental GT combines stellar performance with five-star-hotel luxury—some might even call it an exercise in excess. It’s a revamp of one of the most popular and well-received grand touring exotics and offers the choice of two massive turbocharged engines, a 626-horsepower W12 or a 542-hp V8.
Buyers have more customization options than ever before and when compared to other high-end, similarly priced, coupes in the market the Bentley stands head and shoulders above the rest. In this blog, we’ll take a look at the features of the 2020 Bentley Continental GT V8.
Why Buy a Bentley Continental GT?
The Continental GT was a much-needed car in the Bentley lineup. Considering how the other options consist of a few limousines and a Bentayga SUV, the Continental GT V8 is the only “sporty” model. Priced at a reasonable $200,000 (by Bentley’s standards, of course), the Continental offers exotic cabin features that other competitors in the similar price range do not.
Grand touring rivals for the 2020 Continental GT either cost way more than $200,000 or way less. The Aston Martin DB11 and the Rolls-Royce Dawn and Wraith cost more than the GT, but there isn't a car that offers better value for money than 2020 Bentley Continental GT.
Less expensive rivals include the Mercedes-Benz S-Class that’s available in both coupe and convertible. The S-Class is a good car, but it doesn’t even come close to the range of features offered by the Continental GT.
Despite the size of the Continental GT V8 with its large 22-inch diameter wheels the multi-chamber, driver-adjustable air suspension allows for a smooth ride. In the comfort driving and default mode, the Continental GT V8 does a fantastic job of gliding over rough terrain. Switching to the sports mode enables the driver to take complete advantage of the all-wheel drive, active stabilizer bars, air suspension, and torque-vectoring system.
For a car of its size, the Continental GT is surprisingly agile. The handling allows the driver absolute control of the vehicle even in tight corners. While one can argue that the steering isn’t as sharp as other sports cars at the same price, the 2020 GT V8 still manages to exceed expectations.
Compared to the previous model’s 502 lb-ft and 521-horsepower, the 2020 model pushes out 542-hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. Bentley also went ahead and replaced the traditional eight-speed automatic transmission for a new dual-clutch transmission. The reason behind this decision is to allow for improved acceleration while giving the new model a sportier feel.
The Continental GT’s V8 can go from 0 to 60 in 3.9 seconds, an improvement of 1.2 seconds from the previous model. Also, the engine features cylinder deactivation technology that brings down gas consumption. Overall, the GT V8 sounds and feels amazing. The acceleration isn’t the same as with the W12, but it’s still enough to push you into the seat when hitting the gas.
It takes an experienced driver to understand just how good of a job Bentley’s engineers have done with the dual-clutch transmission. The PDK transmission system isn’t exactly known for its performance— drivers often complain of sluggish acceleration and slow shifts. However, the Continental GT proves all the naysayers wrong. Never before has anyone experienced smooth shifts and seamless acceleration like when they power up the Continental GT V8, that comes installed with the PDK transmission system.
The exhaust does an excellent job of containing the engine sound but select the sports mode and you’ll hear some of the power snapping from the back end. The 2020 GT V8 drifts away from the composed tradition of Bentley—it’s sporty, and it lets the driver feel it.
Even for the sporty Continental GT, Bentley has stuck to its tradition in creating a beautiful, luxurious interior. Almost every inch of the cabin is made from leather, metal, or wood. Plastics are only used for buttons and controls. The leather is exceptionally soft, and buyers can select from various design patterns, shades, and colors.
The interior masterfully balances modern technology with the elegance that the manufacturer is so famous for. A 12.3-inch touchscreen and infotainment system forms the front and middle of the car. The screen can be replaced with a flat panel or a gauge panel consisting of a thermometer, chronograph, and compass.
Buyers can purchase the Touring Specification package, which costs around $8,385 extra and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, night-vision display, and automatic emergency braking.
