I choose to believe the below scriptures, among others, tell me that it is okay to listen to others that can guide me to a better understanding of God's word. But, I also have to search the scriptures daily and verify what I hear. I have to make sure it aligns with God's word also. I have to ask myself, is it true or is it false? This is a personal responsibility; it is not the responsibility of someone else. (KJV Bible)
Acts 8:30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
Acts 8:31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
2 Timothy 3:14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
Acts 17:11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
(These people listened then verified. A really good example for us all).
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
I'll give you an example. Many are led to believe that their salvation can be purchased with money. Not so, according to Acts 8:20 and other verses. Far too many don't know this because they don't verify it first. Thus the following saying comes into effect: A fool and his money are soon parted.
Listen, but, don't believe it till you verify it for yourself that what was said is actually true (that it matches what is said in God's word). Study your Bibles diligently; verify for yourself what others tell you is in the Bible.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
(Many people that call themselves Christian do not realize we are commanded to study God’s word; just read the above verse. It did not say I wish you would study, or if you find the time to study, it says “study”! Have you obeyed this command)?
