INDEX…..181

Over 200 Black and White photographs; prints and drawings: LOST ERIE, THE VANISHING HERITAGE OF CITY AND COUNTY, Reveals a local world that is now gone as the result of obsolescence, violent acts of nature and Mans plain indifference.  The pictorial record of what has disappeared includes the simple structures of the community’s beginnings – FORTS, MILLS, COVERED BRIDGES, FARM BUILDINGS, AS WELL AS THE LANDMARKS OF A LATER AGE – MANSIONS, GRAND HOTELS, ELEGANT MOVIE PALACES AND FANCY SHIPS.  THE ACCOMPANING TEXT TELLS WHY EACH WAS IMPORTANT TO ERIE’S HISTORY AND WHY WE SHOULD REGRET THEIR PASSING.

THE AUTHOR, JOHN CLARIDGE, IS A FORMER TEACHER AND COLLEGE ADMINISTRATOR AND HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE ERIE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY SINCE 1978.  HE HAS WRITTEN EXTENSIVELY ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION TOPICS AND CURRENTLY SERVES AS THE EDITOR OF THE JOURNAL OF ERIE STUDIES.
