One of the big advantages of algorithmic trading is that it allows us to test and back test our trading systems. We can use this process to progressively improve the performance of the core strategy and even mould it to suit our individual performance requirements. So one trader may be seeking to maximise total profits whilst another trader may be seeking to minimise maximum drawdown and yet a third trader may be concentrating on increasing the average trade value. This is almost impossible to achieve with discretionary trading because we just do not have the statistical data to work with. But with algorithmic trading it is simplicity itself to change some parameter values or add some additional filters and instantaneously retest the results of the system over the last 10 or 20 years of data.
