Edsel Ford had a Continental made for his personal use in 1941. His rich buddies gave him checks to make cars for them, All Continentals were made in a separate room by hand. Only a few coupes and cabriolets were made in short 1946 year. A few hundred with slight trim differences were made in 1947 and 1948, then discontinued. The name has been revived several times, in 1950s 1960s and recently.
You could buy 4 Fords for one Continental, but Ford lost money on every Continental sold.
