Description

Renters' Rebate Program Description: State law provides a reimbursement program for Connecticut renters who are elderly or totally disabled, and whose income do not exceed certain limits. Persons renting an apartment or room, or living in cooperative housing or mobile home may be eigible for this program. Renters' rebates can be up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single persons. The Renters' rebate grant amount is based on a graduated income scale and the amount of rent and utility payments {excluding telephone} made in the calendar year prior to the year in which the renter applies. The Renters' Rebate Program Annual filing period begins April 1st through October 1st. Anyone who misses the filing period can apply for the extension to file, but they must provide a medical reason letter before December 15th.  

Eligibility: Recipient or spouse must be 65 years of age or older, or be 50 years of age or older and surviving spouse of a renter who at the time of the renters' death had qualified and was entitled to tax relief provided such spouse was domiciled with such renter at the time of the renters' death, or 18 years of age or older and eligible to receive Social Security Disability benefits. Applicant must have resided in Connecticut for any one-year period prior to filing an renters' rebate application. Applicant must have qualifying income in the calendar year 2020, and must not exceed $37,600 if unmarried or $45,800 if married, unless legally separated, income for both husband and wife must be counted in establishing qualifying income, Regardless Of Living Arrangements. 

Where To Apply: Application may be made at the Town or City's Social Services agency, where the current recipient resides. To obtain a Renters' Rebate application form {M-35r} go online to www.portal.ct.gov, and print-out a copy.
