My name is Owen, and I’m a licensed teacher with five years of classroom experience. I specialize in tutoring elementary and pre-algebra mathematics to students with math anxiety, learning disabilities, and other math related difficulties. I myself had to manage a learning disability called dyscalculia in order to achieve my academic and professional goals, and I’m here to see that you or your child can do the same. My first half hour introduction session is free, with no commitments, as we discuss the nature of your math difficulties and what I will be able to do to help. A few facts for your consideration:
Between 1% and 6% of people suffer from dyscalculia (a math learning disorder), usually undiagnosed.
Learning abilities like dyscalculia can occur in people of all intelligence levels, and those with autism and ADD/ADHD.
About 17% of people suffer from a high level of math anxiety, usually undiagnosed.
Mathematical learning disabilities and math anxiety can be barriers to academic and professional success for those who are otherwise capable.
I have experience working with students dealing with ADD, ADHD, autism, and all manner of anxieties and learning disabilities. My goal is to make the tutoring process understandable and tolerable for students who are math avoidant, and use practical math subjects like personal finance and statistics to practice core math skills. I also use games, including Dungeons & Dragons and major league sports, to make working with numbers less stressful.
I should mention that I was a high school history teacher, not a math teacher. While other math tutors can offer greater mastery of advanced mathematics than I can, I bring empathy for math difficulties. As the subject has never been easy for me, I have discovered and developed a variety of techniques to build confidence with basic mathematics. I work with students from 5th to 12th grade, and make appointments Monday - Friday, from 9am to 9pm. After a free introductory session, my rate is $120 per hour for in-person tutoring (masks and social distancing required) anywhere in NYC and $100 per hour for online tutoring. I have limited spots available at a reduced rate for families who need it, so please inquire if you are concerned about my normal rate.
