On the night of December 25–26, 1776, Washington led about 2,400 Continental Army troops across the icy Delaware River from Pennsylvania (near present‑day Washington Crossing, PA) to New Jersey This was not a crossing into New York, but a maneuver to attack the Hessians stationed in Trenton, New Jersey. The crossing was made in severe winter conditions and was followed by an eight‑ to ten‑mile march to Trenton, where the Americans surprised and defeated the Hessians in the Battle of Trenton on December 26!
