Helping Those in Need When What You Give Is Already Spent!
Jesus’ Words on the Widow’s Offering
In Mark 12:41–44, Jesus sat opposite the temple treasury and watched the crowd putting money in. Many rich people gave large amounts, but a poor widow came and placed two small copper coins — worth only a few cents. Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on”
Meaning and Application
Jesus’ words emphasize that the value of a gift is not measured by the amount given, but by the proportion of one’s resources that is offered. The widow’s offering, though small in monetary terms, represented her entire livelihood, showing complete trust and sacrifice. This contrasts with the rich who gave from surplus, often leaving their needs met.
Chairty, the Willingness to Give to Help Others less fortunate; Why is it important to know this truth?
Because in the life of charity, all growth comes from God, but at the same time he does not will to save us without us (1 Cor 3:6, CCC 1847). In other words, although charity and our growth in this life of friendship with God are his gift to us, God requires of us our cooperation, that we desire and strive to grow in this life and ask him to perfect it within us. “If you knew the gift of God,” Jesus says to the Samaritan woman, “you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water” (John 4:10).
