Description
A payroll clerk, also known as a payroll administrator, is responsible for ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time. Their duties include:
- Collecting and verifying data: Gathering payroll data and timesheets from employees, and verifying their work hours
- Processing payroll: Entering and maintaining information in the payroll system, such as salaries, hourly rates, commissions, bonuses, paid leave, and deductions
- Calculating pay: Calculating pay and deductions, and issuing checks or direct deposits
- Updating records: Keeping payroll records up to date, including changes to exemptions, insurance coverage, savings deductions, and job titles
- Reconciling payroll: Reconciling payroll to the general ledger and monthly bank statements
- Preparing reports: Compiling summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, leave, disability, and nontaxable wages
- Processing tax deposits: Recording and processing federal and state payroll tax deposits
- Issuing statements: Issuing deductions, earnings, and other statements to employee
